I held my weapon on the three of them as we hurdled the four corpses on the ground. Just before walking out the door, I gave Ribeiro a final reminder. “You’re the only one who matters, so don’t do anything stupid, or your parents bite the dust. Got it?”

She nodded. “Please be gentle with them.”

“They’ll be fine as long as you cooperate. We have to hurry up across the street. The three of you are going in the trunk until we arrive at the secure location. Don’t give me any problems, understood?”

Ribeiro rolled her eyes and tried to hide her anger.

When we walked out the door, the crowd had swelled to fifty or more. They began hissing at us and waving sticks. I saw a few blades shining in the sunlight. Weiss and I had Ribeiro and her parents sandwiched between us. We urged them on toward the car parked across the street. There were various metal objects thrown our way, and Weiss took a beer bottle to the shoulder. A few in the crowd started moving toward us, but Ribeiro waved them off. We managed to get the three of them in the trunk and peeled out of there before any real damage was done.

As soon as we got on the road, I tried calling Sarah, but it went to voice mail. I dialed Renson right afterward.

“Man, are you okay? I haven’t heard back from you in hours,” he said.

“I wouldn’t say fine, but I’ll make it. How’s Sarah?” I asked.

“She’s going to be okay. They’re holding her and Cole for observation. They’re both suspected of having a concussion, but they got off lucky.” Renson paused. “Do you have Ribeiro with you?”

I ignored his question. “Sarah’s there by herself?”

“I was gonna go, but Silva said he’d go instead, so he’s with her now.”

“Am I supposed to be relieved to hear her ex-fiancé is watching over her?”

Renson cleared his throat. “Let’s stop the childish games. Now, do you have Ribeiro with you?”

“Yes, but there are a few things you should know before we arrive.”

“I’m all ears.”

“I have Ribeiro and her parents with me.”

“What? Why are you bringing them with her? I have no space for them, and no need for them either.”

“I understand, but they’re the best leverage we can get. Trust me on this,” I said.

“Well, I guess I have no choice. How long before you’re here?”

I looked down at my watch. “I don’t know. Maybe fifteen or twenty minutes.”

“Was there something else? You said you had a few things.”

I took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “You’re not gonna like this, boss.”

Renson groaned. “What is it?”

“Weiss is headed back to the safe house with me. You’ll understand after I tell you how this all came together.”

“You cannot do that! It’s a serious violation of protocol. It’s one thing for us to work with other agencies but a whole different matter altogether to bring them into a secure location. You have to stop where you are immediately and drop Weiss off.
